Intended Audience

This course is intended for OSU Extension staff.  Any others who enroll will be unenrolled.

Time Requirements

  • Three hours total
  • The course is divided into 13 modules which can be completed at your own pace.
  • Each module should take approximately15 minutes to complete.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to

  • Identify key concepts related to wildlife in a residential area
  • Evaluate different control methods for different wildlife species
  • Apply safe and legal practices for animal control
  • Describe the best practices for meeting various control objectives

Teaching Method

This is an asynchronous, self-paced, course.  You will watch videos, engage in learning activities, and take quizzes.  

Course Description

This course will address ways to avoid and minimize conflicts between humans and wildlife in urban residential settings.  After learning some general concepts of wildlife management, we will explore control options for wildlife species that are often a nuisance:  armadillo, beaver, Canada goose, cat, mole & gopher, skunk, squirrel, rabbit, raccoon, deer, and woodpecker. Finally, you will practice what you have learned as you play "Backyard Wildlife Investigator."

Completing the Course

  • To complete the course, you must access all pages and earn 85% on the Post-test.
  • Once you have completed the course, you can print a certificate of completion.
